Woman Airlifted Off Pine Cove Hiking Trail Above Palm Springs – Patch

PALM SPRINGS, CA — A hiker was injured on a trail east of Pine Cove Tuesday. Firefighters arrived to rescue and lowered her down from a mountaintop by way of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

The “hiker down” call was received at about 5:10 p.m. in the area of the Long Valley Ranger Station and the Round Valley Campground, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

Multiple engine crews arrived at the remote location accessible only by unpaved roads and trails deep within the San Bernardino National Forest.

As of 6 p.m., firefighters made their way to the victim, identified only as a woman, who suffered an unspecified leg injury, according to officials.

Fire personnel discussed multiple options regarding how to get the woman down the mountain. One option was to have her moved to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway less than two miles to the northeast, possibly via a sheriff’s helicopter, after which she would be taken down from 8,500 feet via the tram and placed in the care of an ambulance crew.

Instead, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Aviation Unit Rescue 9 performed a “hoist rescue” in the remote location, and flew her to a waiting ground ambulance.

She was taken to a nearby hospital in Coachella Valley with moderate injuries. No additional information on the injured hiker was available.
