San Antonio named one of the best cities for hiking in the country, study says – mySA

San Antonio was recently named as one of the best cities for hiking in the United States in 2022, according to a ranking from LawnStarter. According to the list, the Alamo City was ranked in the 36th spot out of 200 cities.

LawnStarter, an online marketplace for consumers and lawn care experts, ranked the 200 biggest U.S. cities from best (No. 1) to worst (No. 200) for hiking based on their overall scores (out of 100 possible points), averaged across all of the weighted metrics listed below.

The metrics included the number of hiking access, quality, supplies, climate, and safety. San Antonio’s overall score was 52.06. In the ranking, Portland, Oregon ranked first, while Tuscan claimed the second spot.

In Texas, El Paso was the first city to make it on the ranking at No. 18. Austin followed with the No. 30 spot. Garland (No. 43) had the highest average when it came to consumers rating their hiking trails. While ranked low, Midland (No. 184) topped the cities with the lowest natural hazard risk.

The City of San Antonio has been trying to improve its overall park score index, which measures park systems across 100 of the largest cities in the U.S. In 2022, the city announced how San Antonio’s percentage of residents within a 10-minute walk to a park has increased steadily over the last three years from 42% in 2019 to 52% in 2022, according to a recent index from the Trust for Public Land.
